Patios or terraces are often the interface between house and garden.  The place we sit in most when we are out and the place we look at most when we are in. Careful selection of plants for the patio will help create shelter, intimacy and style to add the finishing touch that links inside and out.  Featured here are a few of our favourites so why not visit the nursery for inspiration.

Why not try Phormium, Zantedeschia, Acer palmatum Bloodgood, Lavender & Convolvulus together with box balls for a striking combination. All suited to planting in pots. Add movement with soft grasses such as Stipa tenuissima. Visit us for more ideas!

What to plant on the patio

There is a huge selection of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, bedding and bulbs to choose from. Although some of these plants are not as flamboyant as those used in summer containers, you can still create shelter, privacy and all year interest with careful plant selection.

Create the Look!

A selection of our favourite architectural choices for a leafy secluded atmosphere is featured below and we usually stock a variety of sizes to suit all budgets.

Below from left to right:  Yucca, Trachycarpus fortunei, Phyllostachs nigra (black stemmed bamboo), Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ and Nandina domestica. All would enjoy a sunny aspect.

For a shadier part of the garden try large leaf Fatsia japonica, clump forming bamboo Fargesia Jumbo, Phormium, Dicksonia antartica tree fern and Pieris.  Phormiums will tolerate some shade but colour up better in sun.  Our tree ferns start to unfurl their leaves in spring and by summer provide a spectacluar canopy.

Japanese Maples

Add deciduous Japanese maples to create a special atmosphere in shadier areas of the garden.

Don’t miss out on our wonderful specimen Japanese Maples – the leaves start to unfurl in Spring and are popular for their striking spring and autumn colours and architectural foliage.

Sun Lovers

For a touch of the mediterranean try a specimen silver Olive tree underplanted with Sage, Lavender and Thyme. Perfect for a low maintenance gravel garden.
