Shrubs for year round colour
Top: Box ball topiary. Bottom: Aucuba, Choisya, Euonymus, Photinia, Nandina domestica
Spring is the ideal time to fill gaps in the garden but where do you start with so many wonderful plants to choose from?
Here are some of our most popular large evergreen shrubs we recommend at the nursery:
- Aucuba japonica 'Variegata'
- Euonymus japonicus
- Viburnum tinus
- Prunus laurocerasus
- Nandina domestica
- Box, Bay and Yew topiary
These shrubs are ideal for filling a gap and providing evergreen structure and year round interest. They made our top list as each has additional features such as flowers and berries, changing leaf colour or simply great foliage. If you already have these, then try one of the more unusual varieties such as Photinia ‘Pink Marble’ or Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’. Lighter variegated shrubs such as Euonymous and Aucuba are ideal for lighting up a shady spot.
For a more formal or contemporary look box balls and topiary cones in bay or yew provide the perfect backdrop for more seasonal bulbs and flowers. It’s important to ensure your shrub will thrive in your specific garden conditions so check how much light it will receive and the soil conditions and we’ll help you choose.
