Fall in love with our spring flowering trees

Is there anything more whimsical and romantic than spring blossom?

Trees are a wonderful source of inspiration that highlight the changing seasons, encourage wildlife to flourish as well as helping to purify our air.  They are also fantastic plants when you want to create a more established feel or when you need privacy and screening.

Is there anything more whimsical and romantic than spring blossom?

From billowy, bridal like blossoms to showy shrubs, here are our top picks:

Crab apples – pink in bud opening to white makes the flowers of ‘Evereste’ quite eye catching. Crab apples have the added bonus of autumn fruit which is great for wildlife. Our top picks are Malus ‘Evereste’, ‘Royalty’, Malus toringo ‘Scarlett’ and ‘Rudolph’.

Malus ‘Evereste’

Amelanchier (Juneberry) – a great all-rounder with pure white blossom in the spring, berries in June and stunning Autumn colour. This tree really has something for every season. We love Amelanchier lamarckii and Amelanchier x grandiflora ‘Ballerina’.

Amelanchier × grandiflora ‘Ballerina’

Crataegus (Hawthorn) – This is an undemanding tree, thriving in various environments including coastal, exposed, polluted, and damp locations. As an added bonus it is popular with wildlife. Flowers from May to June. Why not try:

Crataegus x lavalleei ‘Carrièrei’
Crataegus laevigata ‘Paul’s Scarlet’

Magnolia – much more exciting than the well-known paint of the same name, Magnolia trees have goblet shaped flowers and are admired by some as the icons of spring. Go for Magnolia kobus, ‘Galaxy’ and ‘Susan’.

Magnolia x hybrid ‘Galaxy’
Magnolia ‘Susan’

Flowering Cherries – the quintessential spring blossom tree with an abundance of flower to herald springs arrival. We like Prunus ‘Taihaku’, Prunus serrulata ‘Pink Perfection’, Prunus x yedoensis and Prunus ‘Kanzan’.

Prunus serrulata ‘Pink Perfection’

Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ (non-fruiting pear)

For something a bit different, why not try Paulownia tomentosa (Foxglove tree). The fragrant, Foxglove- like blooms appear on bare stems in late April to May, followed by large, heart-shaped, bright green leaves. This is a spectacular deciduous tree that copes well with urban pollution.

Here are our favourite spring flowering large shrubs:

Cercis canadensis
Exochorda x macrantha ‘The Bride’
