Description
Commonly known as black bamboo due to the nature of the young bright green canes turning a deep black in maturity. Making a striking contrast from the long elegant green leaves jutting out sporadically. For planting, it is suggested to have a different bamboo alongside as to show off its most contrasting colours, or to create screening along a wall this is bound to add an exotic feel to most garden designs.
This hardy evergreen has a preference for moist but well-draining loam-based soil, partial shade to full sun in a more sheltered position, it is a fast grower so will need some space to spread. The nigra bamboo is one of the less invasive types, but if you want to restrict its spread, planting with a non-perishable barrier is suggested.
