Like many Acer platanoides species, this Norway Maple tree has small yellow flowers that appear in spring and contrast beautifully with the dark purple foliage, turning orange and yellow gradually in the autumn. This large maple tree is an ideal option for avenue planting and should be planted at a minimum of 10m centres as the large and dark leaves have the potential to steal the light, creating a dark environment below the canopy, it is therefore better to give this tree plenty of space to use the accessible light. Contrasting well with lighter leaved varieties such as Acer platanoides ‘Princeton Gold’, the dark foliage of ‘Royal Red’ can be planted alternately in avenues to accentuate the bold colours.
A vigorous tree that tolerates most soil types, air pollution and is drought resistant. As a young tree Acer platanoides ‘Royal Red’ starts conical in shape before developing into a more broadly oval crown.
Mature height: 12-17m
