Description

Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ is a dark leaved form of Cherry Plum with delicate single pink flowers that appear early in the spring and remain whilst the deep purple foliage begins to emerge. Being early to flower it can be in flower or foliage whilst the frost is still present, a particularly colourful contrast.
Flowers gradually fade to white and contrast brilliantly with the dark leaves and distinctive dark brown bark. Leaves are small and very dark purple and remain dark throughout the season, until turning a brighter red in autumn.
This is a fruiting variety and has been known to produce small juicy red plums some years, although it is not a species to be relied upon for its fruit.
This tree was introduced in the early 1900s and popularly planted as a street tree in post war Britain, establishing itself as a great favourite for urban planting.
A small to medium sized tree, Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ is a fabulous addition to any garden, bringing bright, delicate flowers and rich dark foliage that add contrast to any planting scheme.
It is an extremely tough tree and will tolerate most soil conditions, thriving particularly in well draining soils.
This Prunus develops a rounded crown at maturity. Unlike other Prunus, it will tolerate severe pruning, making it easier to maintain in a small garden.
This tree is good for bees and other pollinators.
Mature height: 5-8m
