Architectural plants in a garden add height, structure, and drama and are particularly effective in smaller gardens for creating atmosphere, reminiscent of holidays abroad.  They are equally as effective when used in larger gardens to create a focal point, impact, and style.

Here we’ve put together a selection of just a few of our favourite architectural choices for both sunny and shadier areas.   At this time of year, the nursery is brimming with plants both large and small and well worth a visit for inspiration and advice.

For a shady spot

Architectural plants suitable for a shady spot naturally create a lush, relaxing atmosphere to enjoy.

Above from left to right:  Large leaf Fatsia japonica, clump forming Fargesia bamboo, Acer palmatum Bloodgood (Japanese maple), Dicksonia Antarctica (tree fern), Pieris and box balls in all sizes, from 30cm right up to a whopping 70cm diameter.

Don’t miss out on our wonderful specimen Japanese Maples – we have a whole range to choose from.  The leaves start to unfurl in Spring and are popular for their striking spring and autumn colours and architectural foliage.

For sunnier spots and around the patio

Above from left to right:  we have Phormiums in many colours, Eriobotyra japonica, Trachycarpus fortunei, Yucca, Phyllostachys and other bamboo (black and yellow stemmed – great for privacy screening) and Cordyline australis both green and red varieties (Cordyline ‘Red Star’ shown above).  All would enjoy a sunny aspect and transform your space.

Sun lovers for a Mediterranean atmosphere

Above: One of our superb gnarled Olive trees – each one unique from Italy for instant impact and effect.  We have olive trees in all sizes, perfect for creating a Mediterranean style courtyard or patio plus a range of lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage and other sun lovers to complete the theme.
