Description

Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ is our most popular deciduous screening tree. One of the first trees to come into leaf in the spring and the last to lose its leaves in autumn, its ability to hold its leaves so long lends it to be an excellent choice for gardens where privacy is an issue.
Leaves emerge in spring with an abundance of pretty white flower in March. Foliage emerges a bright and glossy green and remains on the tree well into autumn, when it turns a bright orangey red before falling.
Also referred to as the Callery Pear, it has been known to produce very small fruits on occasion, however this is not a regular occurrence nor dependable.
Uniform and columnar pyramidal shape when young it will gradually broaden to a more oval shape as it reaches maturity.
Bred by Edward Scanlon in the United States this tree won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
It is a tough performer, tolerating harsh urban conditions, as well as thriving in an array of soil types. Tolerant of pollution, and some salt laden winds, it should not be planted in direct line with salt.
This medium to large pear tree is very versatile, being used in avenues, parklands, driveways and gardens.
If you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer then we recommend rabbit guards.
This tree is bee friendly.
